Fernand Pierre
Fernand Pierre -----------------------------. This pair of mermaids is one of the last paintings completed by Fernand Pierre before he died in 2002. He was born in 1919 and joined the Centre d'Art in 1947. In 1951 he completed a mural (“La Visitation”) at the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Port-au-Prince. One of his first mermaid paintings, Lasiren and her Consorts of 1949, was reproduced in the exhibition catalog of Jonathan Demme's collection, Island on Fire. Toward the end of his life he returned to painting mermaids representing the loa La Sirene of Haitian Vodou. These mermaids, along with his luxuriant trees with flowers and fruit and his gingerbread houses, are the themes most valued by collectors.
