Jacques Richard Chery was born in Cap Haitien in 1928. Oblidged to workbfrom an early age, he was a barber, then a fireman in the Artibonite region. Completely self taught, he started painting while still ver young. Philome Obin discovered him and encoragaed him to come to Cap Haitien. He absorbed the influence of this school and worked with Seneque Obin and Bottex, painting historical scenes and local festivities with great precision. In 1961, he joined the Centre d'Art in Port au Prince, retaining the attention to detail characteristic of the Cap Haitien school while painting country scenes.
He then started to go in for distortion, very often of a humoristic nature. His stall holders, his children are seen carrying enormous vegetables and fruits. The colors are vivid and the tone joyful. He is world famous. His paintings are in a few museums.
