--------------------------------------------------------------------------At first glance one might have the impression that Mr Cantave work is primitive or naive but on lengthier examination, the lack of university training becomes positive removing certain self concious, premaditated barriers between the artist and the ability to express and create as he stated that he is an "autodidact" or self taught. His subject matter and appearance might be naive, but his approach to painting is from "a higher degree of consciousness". In the "Modern Series" Cantave put a realistic eye in the midst of the abstract face, that causes the image to dominate any room or anyone who sees and look at it. If you look at it long enough it might whisper something to you Mr Cantave says, "something in relation to the self"...... This kind of composition, flat, geometric, and with blazing colors make the artpeice more direct and powerful, because it shows psychological truth, rather than fiction. These paintings suggest notions of deep ancestral memories. By using different color planes it also try to show, from an oblique way, just like the essence of nature is hidden, the face or the image is concealing something. These paintings shows the concealment in continuity which is eternal or without end. Cantave steers and control flatness and rawness to a degree that robs flatness and rawness of their significance. the final result is pure visual sensation and he states that "Trying to attain the chromatic intensity of stained glass thru pure color". .........................................
