Calixte Henry.............Calixte was born in 1933 in Port au Prince. His father was a marine engineer and his mother a dressmaker. He began to paint at the Centre D'Art with Dewitt Peters in 1955. He then became associated with the Monnin gallery, later teaching his own students. He was a primitive then a cubist, and now sees himself as an impressionist. He has had many exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe and received a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation. He is a master, much sought-after and respected.--------------------------"People say Haitian art is naive. That is not true. They say our identity is Voodoo. I say it isn't. I paint anything that moves me. I'am disciplined. Tuesdays Wenesdays and Thursdays I paint. Saturdays, I visit friends. On Sundays, in front of my easle, I carry on dialogues with myself. My wish is to discover something new every day. The work of Calixte Henri is unmistakable. You can never get to the top of the mountain. There is always a point which is higher up."
