Maxan Jean Louis was born in Jeremie in 1966. His parents were farmers. After leavingjunior high school he became an apprentice brick layer and then started to paint under the direction of his more famous cosin Henri Jean Louis. The violence and killings which followed the coup of 1991 led him to abandon the pretty images of beloved Haiti and he worked in a surrealistic style to condem the horrors of the time. The Haitian gallery owners Bourbon Lally fosteres his talent. Maxan is a leading artist in Petion Ville. he is also part of Saint Soleil.
